Pros + Cons of Adopting Cats/Dogs + Meet Roxanne

By 10:00 AM , , , , , , , , ,

Breaking Dawn Part I is currently on my TV, which is kind of why this post is going to be about wolves. Growling, ferocious wolves that I kind of want to adopt, er, figuratively and only in my mind. I mean, who doesn't want a wolf as a pet? They're freaking adorable {until they decided to chew all over you, then ouch}. I kid, I kid. This post is actually about dogs. I just think that the the intro sounded better with wolves instead. {Le duh.} I mean, wolves are the cool kids of the pack. {Y'all see what I did there? Harhar. ;}

Anyways, I wanted to talk to ya'll about dogs. Dogs are known as man's best-friend, man's bro, man's ride-or-die....okay, maybe just the former, but y'all get what I mean. Dogs are some of the most reliable, loyal animals on the earth. They are my favorite type of animal, and my heart absolutely melts each and every time I come in interaction with one. Whether the dog is on the street or in the shelter, I go all googoogaga over them. Seriously. Have you ever seen somebody cooing over a newborn baby? Haha, yeah; that is me when it comes to a dog. "Oh my gosh! Can I touch your dog?"

On another note, just because I want to get this out in the open, I'm not sure if I ever told you guys about my dog, Missey. On December 23, 2012, my family had to have her euthanized because her cancerous tumor began to bleed. {If I have not written a post about that yet, I am going to in the near future.} It was a hard, hard decision, and from that day forth, everything changed. If you have a pet, I am pretty sure you can empathize with me. Our pets become our family. Missey was my sister. She was my best-friend. I miss her terribly. Having to decide whether she lives, yet stays in pain, or get put to rest to not be in pain any longer was the hardest thing that my family had to do in our entire life. But, I will save the longer story for another day.

My point in telling you the aforementioned event dealing with my dog is to say that after you lose such a close family member {e.g. pet}, it can be a difficult barrier to break between knowing when the right time to get another pet is and when you still need time to grieve. I understand that everybody has their own belief when it comes to the right amount of time to adopt again, and better yet, if it is even okay to get another pet. Some people say no, it's too hard. Others say that while it does hurt to lose one, it's okay to get another. Well, I am in the latter group. I want another dog or cat.

Seeing as my family is pretty split between whether we should get a dog or cat {although the latter seems to be rolling out on top at the moment}, I wanted to share a list with the positives and negatives of getting a cat and/or dog. Plus, at the bottom, I am sharing a dog that I think y'all should really consider either fostering or adopting if you live in Michigan (or are willing to come up here to get her for adoption only).

Benefits of Adopting A Kitty/Cat:

1. They are very self-sufficient.
2. They do not need to be bathed {a lot}.
3. They do not need to be walked.
4. They have a litter box to use instead of waking you up in the middle of the night to go outside to pee.
5. {Some} cats love to cuddle.
6. You will get some laughs from the silly things they do.

Cons of Adopting A Kitty/Cat:

1. If you want a pet to go outside and walk with, then cats are not for you.
2. Some cats are very self-sufficient, so they may not want to cuddle at times.
3. Unless you declaw them {which I believe is inhumane}, they will most likely scratch up your furniture.
4. You most likely will find them in places that they shouldn't be since they can climb and jump very high. #ruhroh

Benefits of Adopting a Puppy/Dog:

1. You will always have someone to play with.
2. Puppy kisses!
3. You will have more of an incentive to get outside and get your exercise on {by walking}.
4. You will get practice of taking care of a child w/o actually having a child first.
5. You'll have a natural protector.
6. You'll have someone to always snuggle with.
7. You will get a lot of laughs from the crazy stuff they do.

Cons of Adopting a Puppy/Dog:

1. You have to potty train a puppy or else your home will be smelling like dog piss and/or poo.
2. You will be awakened in the middle of the night by a dog wanting to go outside for a.) absolutely no reason aside from barking and waking up the neighbors, or b.) to pee.
3. Some of your clothing might get ripped up until you train your dog not to do it.
4. They are not as self-sufficient as a cat and need a lot of attention.
5. They lick themselves and then try to lick your face....{'Nuff said.}

Adopt or Foster Her:

Roxanne

Roxanne

This pretty lil' girl is a four-year-old boxer from Dearborn Animal Shelter. Can I say that she is the sweetest dog ever, and I want her alllll for myself? {I kind of just did. Harhar. ;} But since I cannot have her, I figured why not share her with y'all? She is an absolute sweetheart and absolutely melts any and all hearts.

When my mum, grandma, and I were at DAS a few days ago, I saw Roxanne and could not pull myself away from her. I seriously knelt on the ground and petted her for the longest. All she did was sit there, wag her tail, and lean more into my hand. Whenever I got up, attempting to go away to visit more pets, she jumped up and smiled {ya'll know those cute doggy smiles}, and I {of course} caved in and petted her for a lot longer than I should have. Haha. I regret nothing.

Boxers get a lot of misrepresentation, and I think that is wrong. Any breed of dog could be dangerous--not just boxers or pits or rottweilers. It depends on how you take care of and treat said dog. That is the determining factor for the behavior. A prime example of a horribly stereotyped breed turned good is Roxanne! If you live anywhere near Dearborn (or if you do not mind traveling a bit), please considering giving Roxanne a good home! She is such a lovable dog. Oh gosh, I want her.
